An auditioned chamber choir of about 30 men and women, the Jubilate Singers
began in 1969 as an offshoot of the North York Community Singers. We
perform music from a wide range of choral styles and periods from medieval to
contemporary Canadian, sacred to folk, European to African. Since 2001, we've been enjoying the
direction of our gifted music director and conductor,
Catalan-born Isabel Bernaus.
We are delighted to welcome Caroline Spearing as our conductor for the 2009 - 2011 seasons while Isabel is on maternity leave.
Sherry Squires has been our talented piano accompanist for more than twenty years now.
Reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of Toronto, we sing in many languages
in addition to English and French, including Catalan, Finnish, German, Latin,
Polish, Russian, Spanish and even Beothuk (the language of the exterminated
Newfoundland native tribe). For a better idea of our repertoire, see Past Programs.
Every year, we present a subscription series of three
concerts. In addition to our concert series, we perform at community
events across Toronto. Our rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings from
September through June at St. Leonard's Anglican Church (two blocks north of
the Lawrence subway station, just steps east of Yonge Street).
